The Festival to honor Magdalena's patron saint of San Francisco Javier is a very special annual event. The festival starts at the end of September, when hundreds of the faithful walk to Magdalena from places like Nogales.
The plazas in the historic downtown area (el centro) are filled with vendors selling a variety of products, food and beverages, while dancers perform traditional native dances and local taka-taka and mariachi bands wander the streets playing music.
At midnight on October 3rd, the eve of the observance of the saint's birthday, people gather in the Plaza Monumental to sing Las Mananitas (happy birthday) to San Francisco.
