Santa Maria de Magdalena
Magdalena is also known for its mission church, Santa Maria de Magdalena, built on the site of an original Kino mission and located on Plaza Monumental. See photos.
In addition to enjoying the beauty of the church, many visitors also make a visit to the shrine of San Francisco Javier, which adjoins the church. |
Plaza Monumental
The church plaza connects some of Magdalena's more prominent attractions - the church, Kino's tomb, and the shops.
It is also a great place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of Magdalena.

Virgin Hill
And, one of my personal favorites is the hillside painting of the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe, on a rocky side of a hill just off the highway between Magdalena and Santa Ana.

Kino Mausoleum
Magdalena is the final resting place of Italian Jesuit missionary Father Eusebio Francisco Kino.
His remains can be viewed through glass windows in his mauseleum, located on the church plaza.

Curio Shops
On the north side of the plaza are numerous shops that offer a variety of Mexican goods, from tourist items like art and crafts, to Mexican clothing and footwear.

Colosio Mausoleum
Magdalena is the birthplace of Lic. Luis Donaldo Colosio, the Mexican presidential candidate who was slain in Tijuana in 1994.
His mausoleum, located in the town's cemetery, is a national monument and an inspirational place to visit.

Plaza Benito Juárez
Juarez plaza is a block north of the east side of plaza monumental. Smaller than plaza monumental, this charming plaza has a bandstand and lots of places to sit and relax.

Palacio Municipal
The city hall, or "municipal palace," is just a couple blocks northeast of Plaza Juarez, on Alvaro Obregon. The beautiful building features a combination of colonial and modernist influences, with beautiful murals and stained glass. |
