Magdalena's native son Luis Donaldo Colosio was a favorite to win the election for the presidency of Mexico when he was assassinated by a gunman in Tijuana in 1994. Not long after his death, his wife Diana Laura succumbed to cancer.

The Colosios are entombed in a mausoleum in the Magdalena city cemetery. The mausoleum features quotes and memorabelia from one of Mexico's favorite sons.
